Changing Plans

I like to think that I have a "go with the flow" kind of attitude. Today was a true test to that idea. Rather than taking you through my miserable attempts to narrate the day, I will present my day as a timeline. Jaisy, you may not want to read this..
Original Plan: Breakfast at 6:30AM, bus picks 12 of us up at 7AM to drive to the Elephant and Giraffe Orphanages with the older students. Another bus picks up 4 of us and brings them to the slums. We stay at the orphanages until noon, eat lunch until 1 and work at the school from 1:30-5:00PM.
5:30AM: Alarm goes off. I have 1 hour to wait for the water to heat up, brush my teeth with bottled water, take a cold shower, put my bug spray on and get down to breakfast at 6:30AM.
6:30AM: Arrive at breakfast, eat instant oatmeal and drink a cup of coffee. 7AM: Bus is supposed to arrive to pick us up.
7:30AM: Bus has not arrived, it is at the school picking up the children. We head back to our rooms to wait.
8:00AM: Vanessa, Gretchen, Erin & Donna go downstairs to head to the slums.
8:20AM: Vanessa returns and announces that she cannot bring her spear with her, because they will be using the "Matata" to get them to the slums.
8:25AM; Find out what a Matata is (the public bus)
8:30AM: Our van arrives to bring us to the Giraffe Orphanage. 8:45AM: The group going to the slums realizes they don't have a ride to the Matata.
9:00AM: We pile into the van and plan to drive the slum group downtown to the Matata.
9:15AM: We realize we are not driving downtown.  9:16AM: We learn that we are driving them to the slums on our way to the Giraffe Orphanage.
9:20AM: We drop them off on the street and the Matata picks them up.
9:30AM: Arrive to the Giraffe Orphanage. Hug the kids, feed the giraffe (yucko!), buy some gifts.
10:00AM: We are told we are leaving to the Elephant Orphanage NOW.
10:05AM: We find out we are actually watching a movie about animal babies.
10:06AM: We watch the movie.
10:45AM: Movie is turned off early because we need to be at the Elephant Orphanage by 11AM. 11AM: We arrive to the Elephant Orphanage. I fall in love all over again. This time the baby elephants were playing soccer and dog-piling each other!
12PM: Get ready to eat lunch with the kids at the Elephant Orphanage.
12:01PM: Find our bus is missing.
12:02PM: Learn that we cannot eat at the Elephant Orphanage
12:03PM: Plan to head back to the school in the bus that is remaining and finish our day there.
12:20PM: Find out that our bus is buying Fanta's and bread. Figure out a park we can go to for lunch.
12:30PM: We plan to head to the park, eat "lunch" then go back to the school.
12:40PM: The park we were supposed to go to was bombed 3 weeks ago. We find another park to go to.
1:00PM: Arrive at the park, enjoy "lunch" and plan on staying there for the afternoon to watch a dancing show from 2:30-4:30.
1:30PM: We learn that we only have the buses until 4PM, we plan to pack up and head back to school.
2:00PM: We leave the park to go back to school to sand tables and paint bookshelves.
2:15PM: We flip a U-turn and head back to the park (none of us know why because we don't speak Kiswahili).
2:30PM: We are back at the park because we forgot to pay to use the picnic area.
2:30PM: We plan on dropping Beatrice (the head of the school) off at the school, then head to the Market.
3:30PM: Drop off Beatrice at Humble Hearts.
4:00PM: Find out that we took a "new way" home, no stopping at the market.
4:20PM: Arrive to the Rusam Villa, lock the door, open a bottle of wine and decide not to leave until tomorrow..

  2. Thanks so much for sharing the way it really is. I wish I were there to try to smooth the way, but you can imagine my stories would be the same as yours. Civilization is a complicated and difficult thing to do well at!
